An Atypical Mouse
4-finger computer mouse//Concept//Design//3D Printing
For a client born with four fingers and a fixed wrist, using a regular computer mouse was next to impossible. We developed a 4-finger-friendly, rounded, comfortable mouse form, with a custom-placed click wheel to allow for easy scrolling.
The challenge: My client was born with four fingers and a fixed wrist. It is extremely difficult for him to use a typical computer mouse.
The solution: A more rounded, comfortable form with a wheel on the side to allow thumb scrolling.
Mouse profile showcases rounded form, with thumb-controllable click wheel.
3D Scan- A series of images were merged together with Autodesk Remake to create a 3D model of the Client’s hand.
Sourcing internal components to most easily separate the scroll wheel from the circuit board.
Scanned base of mouse and modeled on top of it, to avoid any issues with optical recalibration.
Sculpting form exploratory to determine optimal hand fit.
3D printed forms to allow for comfort and usability testing.
3D printed top panel outfitted with the buttons and circuit, screwed to base.
Matte black, soft plastic finish.
